Omer Ben-Zvi, Media Communications Chair of Tritons for Israel
On October 6th, 2010, two soldiers will recount their personal experiences of serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) including checkpoints, its attacks against Hamas in Gaza in 2009 and Hezbollah in Lebanon in 2006. They will discuss their backgrounds, life in Israel and answer questions.
Orit and Jonathan will speak at Price Center West Bear Room in Sungod Lounge on October 6th, 2010 at 5:00 PM. The event is sponsored by StandWithUs, and co-sponsored by Tritons for Israel. Admission is free.
Their testimonies contrast sharply with reports of alleged IDF misconduct including the Goldstone Report and recent Gaza flotilla incident. Orit and Jonathan are part of a group that provides video testimony at (www.soldiersspeakout.com) highlighting their personal accounts of the IDF’s moral code. StandWithUs created the website in response to IDF members in its student programs who felt they had to speak out.
The soldiers share experiences rarely told by the international media. They are:
• Orit served as a medic, one of the few females assigned to the West Bank. She was confronted with having to save the life of a terrorist who had orchestrated an attack that killed 21 civilians in a restaurant in Haifa.
Jonathan left the comfort of home in the U.S. to serve in the IDF. His experiences fighting in Lebanon and Gaza explore the moral dilemmas the IDF faces every day as it works hard to protect civilians on both sides against an enemy that does not.
Stand With Us (SWU) is a nine year-old, international, non-profit Israel education organization that ensures that Israel’s side of the story is told on campuses, community, libraries, schools and in the media. SWU hosts speakers, programs and conferences in cities around the world, takes missions to Israel, offers website resources and creates brochures and materials about Israel in a variety of languages and on a variety of topics that are distributed globally. SWU was founded in 2001 in response to the public’s need and desire for more information about the Arab-Israeli conflict. StandWithUsCampus helps college students challenge anti-Israel bias.
