The UCSD College Republicans Condemn Divestment Passage in AS – An Official Statement

College Republicans at UCSD strongly condemn the passage of divestment by the Associated Student government at UCSD. UCSD was founded by Roger Revelle on the principles of tolerance and inclusion. Yesterday the AS government decided to no longer uphold those principles of tolerance, voting to instead isolate a minority group on campus, condemn America’s strongest ally, and alienate the strongest supporter of human rights in the region.

College Republicans have worked tirelessly with pro-Israel groups on campus to try and defeat all divestment bills and will now work to undo the damage that this bill does.

The fact that the members of the Associated Student government, who were elected by democratic methods, had to pass this bill by a secret ballot should serve as a testament to the fact that they knew what they were doing was wrong.

That this bill is nothing more than a blatant attempt to attack Israel is evidenced by the fact that they target only companies. The United States of America is the largest financial backer of the state of Israel, but rather than the Associated Student government of a public university divesting from all taxpayer monies, they targeted private organizations which have made the Engineering part of the University so successful. It is amazing that at a time where half of all college graduates are either unemployed or underemployed, the student government of UCSD finds time to attack the few companies that are continually giving out good paying jobs to college students.

We ask that as public outcry rightly comes out against the passage of this bill, please keep in mind that the majority of students did not support the bill’s passage and College Republicans unanimously opposed this bill’s passage as well.
